Work

The Man Up series utilises mediated images from the world of professional football to explore themes of masculine behaviour, norms, and values. While all works are derived from images of players celebrating a goal, the emotional tone is ambiguous, referencing the questions that arise as we seek healthier, more diverse constructions of masculinity

The Metamorphosis series was initiated in 2016 and continues to evolve. All works have their origins from botanical source material and move from realism to abstraction through processes of enlargement, distortion, and reconstruction. As each work develops, planning and intention gives way to intuition and accident. The transformative process is enabled through the physicality of drawing, overpainting, scumbling, and sanding back. Seeking to reconcile dichotomous elements – line and form, surface and depth, conscious and unconscious, real and imagined – each work is complete when a new state of balance is achieved.

Immanence is a new body of abstract works. ‘Immanence’ is the state of being totally within something; these works ‘emerge’ entirely within and through the process of painting. Through stripping back and reworking previous layers of mark making and under painting, new consensus of form and composition develops. Decision making is singularly governed by the process and the emerging image. The possibility of success or failure is the only certainty.
